Palace built for Emperor Jehangir: A grand monument built by king Raj Bir Singh Deo to invite the newly crowned Mughal emperor Jehangir to visit his kingdom. But first he built a 400-room palace that to accommodate his royal guest. But the Emperor knew that the price of gratitude for a favour done would be high and so he made endless excuses and never made the journey.          As a result the 16th century palace lay empty, waiting for a royal guest who never arrived

One walks through this structure admiring its ornamental ceilings and the few graffiti scarred murals and frescos that an ungrateful emperor never came to admire. According to legend Raj Bir Singh Deo had embedded a diamond in each of the nodes on top of the fretted railing of staircases and balconies around the palace so that the womenfolk accompanying his royal guest could entertain themselves playing treasure hunt; the winner being the one who found the largest gem. Over the years other treasure hunters roamed through the palace breaking off the nodes; whether they found diamonds or not is in the realm of speculation.

Palace of Raj Bir Singh Deo: Across the town, on another little hillock, stands a smaller palace which has seen more activity as it served as the royal residence of Raj Bir Singh Deo and his descendants. Indeed, Datia seems to be wedged in between these two monuments. To the left the spires of chatris or memorials to past rulers of the region rise towards the heavens in silent benediction.
