Corbett: Where Beauty is the Beast

Best places to visit in Corbett, sightseeing & tourist attractions in Corbett

Only if you are lucky will you see a tiger in the wilds of Corbett National Park. The sad truth is that most visitors who come here are so obsessed with the big cat that they often miss out all the other attractions that it has to offer. Indeed, there is far more to Corbett than just tigers as it is home to over 50 species of mammals – panthers, elephants, deer, monkey, wild dog, jackal, fox, otter, wild boar, porcupines… There are 25 reptiles and over 550 birds. Indeed, even if there were no tigers or for that matter any other animals in the park, Corbett would still rank as one of the best birding areas in the country.

 Map of Corbett:

The Reserve spreads over an area of 1,318.54 square kilometres. Since it is situated in a mountainous region the elevation varies between 1,300 feet and 4,000 feet. Corbett is situated in the state of Uttarakhand in Nanital district

Elephant and open jeep safaris: Deep into the forest, one never know what surprises are out there: herds of wild elephants; the waltz of the chital, sheer grace and poetry in motion as they danced across the grasslands; a curious sambar fawn; jackals… maybe even a tiger!

The park is spread across 520 sq km of stately sal forests and rolling grasslands criss-crossed by gushing silver streams and emerald rivers. When the national park was established in 1936, it was the first of its kind in the country. Then again in 1973, it was here that Project Tiger was launched. Currently, the park is believed to have the highest concentration of tigers in the world.

Trek along the river banks: The experience will be rewarding as it will be in the company of fantails, wagtails, flycatchers, kingfishers and a variety of exotic birds with equally colourful names. And if you should hear grumbling in the distant it could be a man-eating tiger on the prowl or the sound of thunder!

What to see: Places You Should Not Miss in Corbett

Corbett museum: Here you will even get to see man-eating tigers and panthers at very close quarters … dead stuffed ones at the Corbett museum located at the entrance of the park. Each exhibit had a little story of its own; the most compelling being of a full-grown tiger that ended up on the wrong end of a duel with a tusker, a battle which raged from dusk to dawn and shattered the silent night with the cries of the animals locked in furious mortal combat… vintage Corbett stuff.

Jim Corbett’s Home: There was more of the same, some 40 km down the road towards Nainital, where the great white hunter’s house has been converted into a museum. Here on exhibit are his personal effects and the score card of the trophies he bagged in the wild, including the Chanpanat man-eating panther – 436 victims – shot in 1907 and the Panar man-eating tiger – 400 victims – shot in 1910.
