ALMORA: A Himalayan Mountain Resort


Situated at an elevation of 5,400 feet in the Himalayas, is the picturesque mountain resort town of Almora. This little hill station at Uttaranchal in India is often referred to as the cultural center of the Kumaon Hills.

Whats Famous Here?:

Natural beauty Perched on the top of a 5 km long saddle-shaped Ridge, Almora is surrounded by the gentle hills of Kumaon from three sides and the mighty snowcapped peaks of the Trishul Ranges from the North. It is also a gateway to the Kumaon region.

Temples in Almora: There are a number of beautiful Hindu temples in and around Almora.

Trekking in Almora: The Pindari Glacier Trek (Soft Trek) starts from Bageshwar, 90 km away. The first leg is by road and the actual trek starts from Lohar Khet. The total trekking distance is 45 km over 6 stages ranging between 5 and 14 km per stage.

Similarly the Kafni Glacier, Sunderdhunga Glacier (both 5 Stages Soft Treks) and Namik Glacier (8 Stages Mild Trek) treks also start from Bageshwar. Likewise all the first stages of these treks are by road. The distance of each stage ranges between 7 and 18 km.

What to see?

Simtola: This is a popular picnic spot with idyllic settings.

Kalimath: Up from this ridge, you get a panoramic view of Almora town.

Bright End Corner: Sunrises and Sunsets; both are spectacular when seen against the snow-capped peaks that encircle the Bright End Corner Ridge.

Parks: A Deer Park at Narain Tewari Debal and the Mohan Joshi Park located on the banks of a V-shaped artificial lake are worth checking out.

Government Museum: It has a fine collection of artifacts that reflect Kumaoni Culture and Art.

How to Reach?

AIR:

The nearest airport is at Delhi(350 km)

RAIL:

The nearest Station is at Kathgodam (90 km) – The only trains that come here are from Delhi.

ROAD:

Several state transport buses are available from Delhi (350 km) as well as Nainital and Ranikhet .

Excursions from Almora:

KATARMAL (10 km): The richly sculpted Katarmal temple is one of the most important temples dedicated to the Sun God.

BINSAR (30 km): From here you get a spectacular panoramic view of the Himalayas, with breathtaking views of the peaks of Trishul and Nanda Devi. Once the capital of the Chgand Rajas, Binsar is set amidst oak forests that are rich in alpine flora and fern and innumerable species of wild flowers.

For those wanting to stay overnight, there are State Tourist Bungalows.

GANANATH (47 km): You can enjoy a scenic drive to a temple GANANATHdedicated to Lord Shiva.

JAGESHWAR (35 km on the road to Pithorgarh): Listed as one of the jyotirlingas, Jageshwar is a group of ancient temples dedicated to a number of deities.

According to legend, it is also the place where Lord Shiva came to perform penance after the sacrifice of his wife Sati only to earn the wrath of the Sapta Rishis.

RANIKHET (50 km): A Nature lover’s delight, Ranikhet nestled in the foothills of the Himalayas is surrounded by pine and oak forests and fruit orchards.

Thrown in for good measure is a golf course, temples, a panoramic view of showcapped peaks, military culture and the legend of a Queen who fell in love with the place so much, that she decided to settle down here.

BAGESHWAR (90 km): Situated on the confluence of two rivers, Bageshwar is famous for its Shiva Temple, also known as Vyagheshwar or Tiger Lord.

Come February each year and it becomes the setting of the large Uttarayani Fair.

A number of glacier treks start from here.

BAJNATH (71 km): Located at an elevation of 4,000 feet on the left bank of the river Gomti, Bajnath has a fine collection of 13th century temples.
